As the days grow shorter and the warmth of summer begins to fade, most people start to feel a pang of sadness. The high temperatures, beach days, and late sunsets that define the season are slipping away, replaced by the inevitable march towards cooler weather and longer nights. For many, this transition brings mixed emotions—especially in regions where winter means months of cold, wet, and dreary days. Students and teachers alike feel the weight of returning to school, marking the end of carefree days and the start of structured routines.

But for one group of people, the end of summer signals something far more exciting: the start of football season. For NFL fans, the beginning of September isn't just about back-to-school or the changing of the leaves. It marks the return of a 24-week spectacle that dominates their lives every Monday, Thursday, and Sunday.
The NFL Season: A Fan’s Journey
For an NFL fan, the end of summer is indeed bittersweet, but the sweetness far outweighs the bitterness. Yes, we say goodbye to sunny days and outdoor barbecues, but in return, we get to embark on a journey filled with touchdowns, nail-biting finishes, and the hope that this could finally be our team's year.
As the pre-season wraps up and teams finalize their rosters, there’s an electric anticipation in the air. It’s like the calm before the storm—a period of quiet excitement as we pore over depth charts, read every training camp report, and watch Hard Knocks episodes as if they hold the key to our team’s success. There’s a sense of renewal, of starting fresh, where anything is possible. Every fan clings to the hope that this season will be different—that the stars will align, and our team will rise to the occasion.
The Rituals and Routines
For fans, football season isn’t just about watching games—it’s a way of life. We plan our weekends around the schedule, stock up on snacks, and make sure our fantasy football lineups are set. There's a rhythm to the season that we fall into, and it’s comforting. It’s about more than just the game; it’s about community, tradition, and the shared experience of celebrating victories or commiserating over losses with fellow fans.

And then there’s the ritual of the first game day. There’s nothing quite like waking up on that first Sunday of the season, knowing that in a few hours, the wait will be over. The grill gets fired up, the jerseys come out of the closet, and the countdown to kickoff begins. It’s a day full of possibility—where every team is undefeated, and every fan can dream of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in February.
The Escape from Reality
As much as we love summer, there's something about football season that offers a unique escape. The game itself provides a reprieve from the daily grind, a chance to lose ourselves in the strategy, the drama, and the sheer athleticism on display. And for those of us who also follow other sports, the NFL season fills a void that’s been there since the NBA and NHL finals wrapped up in June. Sure, baseball’s still in mid-season, but there’s nothing quite like the intensity and unpredictability of football.
When the first snowfall arrives, we NFL fans know that the weather may be bleak for the next few months, but we’ve got something to look forward to every week. As the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, football provides warmth and excitement, something to break up the monotony of winter.

The Sweetness of the Season
So yes, the end of summer is bittersweet. We’ll miss the long days and warm nights, but the start of football season makes it all worthwhile. It’s a time when hope springs eternal, where every fan can believe that this year, things will be different. And as we settle into our game day routines, surrounded by friends and family, we’re reminded that while summer may be over, the best part of the year is just beginning.
For NFL fans, the start of the season is more than just a continuation of the calendar—it’s the beginning of a journey that will take us through the highs and lows of competition, all the way to the Super Bowl. And that’s something worth celebrating, even if it means saying goodbye to summer.
